About the Project
Gas spheres used for LPG storage were engineered many years ago; but do they still meet today’s stringent standards? Vicoma provided the answer for a prominent client. Spoiler alert: yes, these spheres remain fully compliant with current regulations.
The safety requirements for gas spheres have evolved, with new risks such as terrorist threats now taken into account. This led our client to request a thorough reassessment. The key concern: if one sphere were to explode, what impact would this have on the neighbouring ten spheres?
Vicoma’s Role
Our Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis revealed the effects of such an explosion. The shockwave would initially push nearby spheres away before causing a suction effect, exerting significant forces on the affected sphere and causing it to move. Fortunately, these forces are extremely brief, and the sphere can withstand the temporary deformation without any damage. The conclusion: the site is safe.
Result
Vicoma has confirmed that safety remains fully up to standard. Our client can rest easy once again.
