About the Project
In collaboration with Tata Steel Nederland, a dual pipeline route comprising the North and South pipelines was replaced over a total length of more than 330 metres. The project required a design that fits within the existing situation and continues to operate reliably despite temperature fluctuations and operational movement.
Vicoma’s Role
Vicoma was responsible for the engineering of the pipeline route. We started with a 3D scan of the existing situation, which formed the basis for the design. We then carried out pipe stress calculations, including an analysis of the behaviour of the pipelines in combination with tie rods.
In addition, we designed bespoke sliding sections, support frames, fixed and sliding support points, and pendulum supports. By applying sliding systems, the pipelines can move in a controlled manner without unwanted resistance or additional loads.
Result
A future-proof pipeline installation in which thermal expansion and contraction at medium temperatures of up to approximately 80°C are controlled effectively. The sliding sections are fitted with a lubrication system to ensure reliable movement during operation. With around 17 support frames, tie rods and smart sliding systems, the stability of the complete pipeline route is safeguarded.
