About the Project
How do you safely empty a 45-tonne bin inside an existing facility? For Tata Steel IJmuiden, Vicoma provided the basic engineering for two new tipping frames.
The enclosed space will house two tipping frames side by side, separated by a partition wall. The hot product falls into a specially designed concrete container, after which it can be removed using a Bobcat. This creates a practical solution within the limited space of the existing building.
Vicoma’s Role
Vicoma developed the basic design for the enclosed space, the concrete container and the tipping frames. Several technical challenges came together in this project. A full bin weighs approximately 25 tonnes itself and contains another 20 tonnes of material. When tipped, the contents fall out of the bin, causing the load on the tipping frame to change instantly.
Weekly progress meetings with Tata Steel enabled questions to be addressed quickly and kept the project on track towards the delivery date.
Result
Vicoma delivered a complete 3D model, design drawings and supporting design calculations. This gives Tata Steel a clear basis for tendering the detailed engineering and construction of the tipping frames and enclosed space.
