About the Project
Driven by the appeal of the Rotterdam port expansion to businesses, there was an urgent need for new switching stations to distribute electrical energy. The 66/25/23 kV Maasvlakte switching station forms part of a cluster of three stations, alongside those at Gerbrandyweg and Kop van de Beer. Stedin commissioned us for the complete design, with the fundamental objective of achieving a recognisable architectural unity.
Vicoma’s Role
For this project, we designed a compact building housing various switching rooms. The floor plan was developed based on the relationship diagram, resulting in a logically organised layout for internal spaces, outgoing cables, escape routes, and vertical circulation.
Our multidisciplinary approach provided clear insight into the project’s principles and constraints, enabling us to achieve an optimal physical connection to the energy grid.
A distinctive feature of this building is the installation of a 66 kV GIS (SF6 gas-insulated switchgear), where we carefully balanced accessibility for system replacement with fire safety requirements.
Result
“Simplicity is compressed complexity.” Through considerable effort, we successfully untangled the complex network of cables and developed a clear, structured concept. This is reflected in the station’s design, featuring clean surface divisions and subtle colour nuances on the façade.
The outcome? A bold, industrial building that safeguards its valuable interior like a robust treasure chest.
