Stedin: Kop van de Beer switching station and transformer cells

About the Project

Kop van de Beer may be a relatively small station, but that does not make it any less important. This 25/21 kV switching station plays a crucial role in the expansion of the power distribution network in the Port of Rotterdam.

Vicoma’s Role

From the outset, we assembled an internal team comprising representatives from the key disciplines involved in the project. This approach ensured a streamlined development of both the building and its installations, based on principles of equality and parallel collaboration.
We designed the linear structure following the principle of “form follows function.” High-voltage power enters the building from the north side, is stepped down via the transformers, and then distributed through the medium-voltage rooms. This layout provides clarity in the design, construction, and operation of the building.

Special attention was given to the impact of external factors on the transformers, resulting in the decision to fully enclose them in a completely above-ground setup.

Result

The outcome is a modest yet modern building that blends seamlessly into the Maasvlakte context. Its design aligns with the two other stations developed simultaneously in the area, as requested by Stedin. The concrete walls of the transformer cells reflect the precise nature of this technical structure. The combination of light grey brickwork and dark grey coated metal elements mirrors the internal technology. By emphasising the entrance with glass, we visually interrupted the otherwise closed façade typical of switching stations. It’s an excellent example of how pragmatism and aesthetics can complement one another.
