About the Project
Urban farming is a rapidly growing and innovative field, focused on producing food sustainably and efficiently; minimising water use, transport needs, and energy consumption. One specialist in this sector continually evolves its operations and technologies. To ensure that safety kept pace with innovation, the company asked Vicoma to conduct a comprehensive safety scan, aiming to guarantee a safe working environment for employees across all departments.
The company’s operations span several distinct areas. In the sowing department, trays are automatically filled with soil via a production line, after which seeds are mechanically sown. The growth department houses several climate-controlled rooms, each equipped with dedicated systems for climate regulation and water treatment to optimise plant development. In the harvesting department, mature plants are transferred to a production line, where they are automatically cut just above the soil level for processing.
Supporting these operations, the utility room supplies the air handling units with essential services, including hot and cold water, glycol and CO₂, ensuring stable and efficient environmental control throughout the facility.
Vicoma’s Role
Vicoma delivered a full-service solution by drawing on in-house specialists across multiple disciplines, including machine safety, occupational health, and food safety. We reviewed compliance with the Machinery Directive, assessed working conditions under the Dutch Working Conditions Act (Arbowet), and ensured adherence to building codes. As the client operates in the food industry, hygiene standards were also a critical part of the scan; and were thoroughly addressed.
Result
The client received a strong assessment outcome, confirming that their Occupational Health and Safety and general safety procedures were already well-structured. Still, Vicoma provided valuable insights and practical recommendations for further enhancing safety across all operations; ensuring that innovation and employee wellbeing go hand in hand.
