Royal Netherlands Navy: Significant energy reduction thanks to new lighting installation

About the Project

The Directorate of Material Maintenance (DMM) is the maintenance organisation of the Royal Netherlands Navy in Den Helder. A large part of the Navy’s equipment, as well as that of other military branches, is serviced here. In addition, DMM is responsible for all supporting services.
One of DMM’s projects involved replacing the existing, outdated lighting system in Dock VI. The old system used sodium gas discharge lamps, which were to be replaced with LED fixtures to create a future-proof lighting installation for Dock VI.

Vicoma’s Role

Vicoma was commissioned to work on the Dock VI Lighting Plan Project. Together with a specialist lighting partner, we developed a comprehensive lighting plan. The starting points included the Programme of Requirements, light measurements of the existing installation, and additional user demands.

Since it’s difficult to describe the visual impact of lighting solutions in words alone, we presented the lighting plan through a virtual reality model. During the presentation, users were able to experience and evaluate the design using a VR headset. After the lighting plan was approved, we prepared a detailed specification, including all Navy-specific requirements and installation instructions.

Result

The specification for the new, sustainable lighting installation was successfully delivered. Throughout the project, Vicoma worked closely with all stakeholders and users of Dock VI, resulting in strong engagement and high satisfaction with the final outcome.

Dock VI will soon benefit from a much more comfortable lighting environment with improved quality, better illumination, and reduced shadowing. In addition, the Navy will achieve an annual energy reduction of 35%.
