About the Project
Asbestos poses a serious threat to public health. During work at the Naval Base in Den Helder, it was identified that the compressed air system might contain asbestos gaskets. Immediate action was required, as any contact with this material must be avoided.
The project’s objective was to carefully assess which buildings could have asbestos-suspected gaskets within the system.
Vicoma’s Role
Vicoma’s engineers carried out an inventory of the piping to locate all flange connections. Their expertise and clear communication were essential, particularly in areas where the pipes were difficult to access. In such cases, collaboration with a safety supervisor ensured safe inspection.
To provide a comprehensive overview, the engineers incorporated the available asbestos reports into a complete set of drawings. For sections where the pipes were not visible, accurate estimations were made based on existing documentation.
Result
Our thorough approach quickly provided clarity. Thanks to our detailed drawing package, the Naval Base in Den Helder can now conduct a well-informed risk assessment and take appropriate steps to sample or replace asbestos-containing components. This helps to minimise health risks for employees, recognising that health is a precious asset.
