About the Project
Ioniqa is a cleantech spin-off from Eindhoven University of Technology, specialising in creating value from plastic waste through circular technology. Their unique, revolutionary processing method enables them to transform all types and colours of PET waste into valuable raw materials for new PET of “virgin quality.” Previously, removing colours from plastic was not possible, making coloured PET difficult to reuse. In 2019, Ioniqa was recognised as one of the National Icons by the Dutch government. Their infinite PET upcycling technology is acknowledged as a major breakthrough innovation, with active support from the Dutch government for further development.
Ioniqa initially tested the process in a pilot plant at Plant One in the Port of Rotterdam. Vicoma was engaged to scale up the process to a 10-kilotonne installation.
The project included a high-temperature reactor, various vessels, separation and filtration techniques, two-stage distillation, and a crystalliser. Equipment for powder generation, such as a separator, dryer, and transport systems, was also part of the scope.
Vicoma’s Role
Vicoma carried out all engineering phases required for the plant’s realisation. Our engineers supported conceptual engineering, including process simulation. Under an EPCm contract, we delivered basic and detailed engineering. During construction, we managed equipment procurement and oversaw construction management.
Result
Thanks to effective coordination between all parties involved, the factory was completed and successfully commissioned within fourteen months. Ioniqa now makes the largest global contribution to closing the loop for PET plastics. Unilever and Coca-Cola are key partners in this endeavour.
