Indorama Ventures: Vicoma adds engineering capacity on site

It’s a busy time at Indorama Ventures in Rotterdam, where major expansion is underway at their PTA production facility in the Europoort area. With production capacity set to nearly double, from 350 to 600 kilotons per year, the in-house engineering team has its hands full. To meet the growing demand, Indorama turned to a trusted partner: Vicoma.

“They’ve been working here on-site for about three years now,” says a satisfied Armand van Daalen, Engineering & Facilities Manager at Indorama.

One of the key upgrades in this expansion is a new Regenerative Thermal Oxidiser (RTO) unit, designed to drastically reduce air pollution. While Indorama’s internal team led the engineering for the RTO, this intense effort created resource constraints for other projects.

“But that means other tasks get left behind. We already knew Vicoma from previous projects. They’re a flexible organisation, which fits well with the flexible way we operate,” says Armand.

To help manage the load, Vicoma embedded four to five engineers at the site; working across multiple disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, and Civil & Structural Engineering. These aren’t just engineers; they also act as project managers, overseeing project execution from planning to plant handover.

Armand adds:

“But really, they’re more like engineer-project managers. Here, they’re also responsible for the entire execution of projects: delivering on time, ensuring a smooth handover to the plant, and providing feedback. What we need are people who take ownership of the problem and don’t shy away when things get tough. And that’s exactly what we’ve got, through Vicoma.”
