Mars Veghel: Increasing cooling capacity while reducing CO2 emissions

About the Project

To meet the growing demand for cooling water in its production process, Mars decided to increase the fixed cooling capacity at its Veghel location. This required the addition of NH₃ installations, a heat pump, and condensers.

The existing cooling facility was expanded accordingly, and a new pipeline bridge spanning 115 meters was installed to distribute cooling water efficiently across the factory. These upgrades have significantly reduced the factory’s overall CO₂ emissions.

The Role of Vicoma

Vicoma managed the engineering aspects related to civil, structural, and piping works. We began by conducting a detailed 3D scan of the complex to assess the impact of the pipeline bridge installation on the existing buildings and layout. Vicoma prepared all necessary tender documentation for the cooling house and provided expert advice during contract formation. Our involvement extended from preliminary design through construction supervision to project completion. Throughout construction, we coordinated with multiple contractors and finalised the project with a comprehensive as-built file for Mars.

Result

Mars is now well-equipped for the future. The increased cooling water capacity eliminates the need for temporary cooling solutions during peak summer periods. Additionally, the design thoughtfully accommodates potential future expansions, ensuring long-term operational flexibility.
