About the Project
A major manufacturer faced a seemingly intractable problem: their existing lifting aids did not meet the maximum required lifting capacity. Vicoma was engaged to devise a practically feasible solution.
The client’s internal transport system moved raw materials using bins. However, due to the crane’s limited lifting capacity, not all bin contents could be utilised. Replacing the large number of bins was not a viable option.
Vicoma’s Role
Vicoma applied the Finite Element Method (FEM) to calculate the structural strength of the bins. Previously, these calculations were done manually, but modern software provides far more reliable results. The analysis revealed that the bins were over-engineered.
As it was not possible to alter the wall thickness of the existing bins, Vicoma recommended creating holes in the shields to reduce weight. For future bins, even greater weight savings are possible by reducing wall thickness from the outset.
Result
The reduced bin weight has increased the useful lifting capacity, significantly enhancing the client’s production throughput. Weight reduction through precise FEM calculations can deliver savings in various ways for many clients. Vicoma is pleased to contribute to such successful collaborations.
