H2A Platform: Feasibility study for hydrogen import in Amsterdam

Hydrogen as a solution for the energy transition?
The H2A platform, a collaboration of technology providers and logistics partners, is fully confident it is. A significant rise in hydrogen demand is expected in Amsterdam and its surroundings. Historically, Amsterdam has had substantial storage capacity for (fossil) liquids. The existing infrastructure is suitable for importing hydrogen bound to (in)organic carrier molecules (LOHC or LIHC), provided the right conditions are met.

The ambition is to import one million tonnes of hydrogen per year by 2030. The initial concepts were already in place when the H2A platform sought a partner to help further develop the integration. The choice fell on us.

Vicoma’s Role

Vicoma conducted a feasibility study on the various hydrogen carriers. We outlined what the storage and processing chains should look like.

How much storage capacity is required for the imported liquid, and what space is needed for the dehydrogenation plant? We identified areas where critical information is still lacking; for example, the status of regulations and whether sufficient expertise exists in supply chain and logistics.

Numerous partners are involved throughout the chain, from governments and technology providers to consumers and suppliers. An open attitude from all parties is essential. Vicoma provided technical input during discussions between partners. We developed several concepts and performed financial analyses. Maintaining a constructive and critical approach, we regularly challenged the assumptions made by the consortium.

Result

Our feasibility study has advanced the initial concept considerably, providing a solid foundation for the project’s further development and financing.
