About the Project
“Would you be willing to collaborate on a feasibility study for a two-storey distribution centre in Maarssen?” That was the question Goodman posed to us. We didn’t hesitate for a moment. An unusual, complex, and intriguing assignment is a fantastic challenge; one we gladly embraced.
Vicoma’s Role
Goodman is a global operator. At the start of our study, their multi-level distribution centres were exclusively located in Asia, making this a new venture for them in the European market.
Goodman sets exceptionally high standards, which perfectly suits our approach. We committed fully to the logistics, architectural, and construction challenges. Our in-house structural engineers enthusiastically tackled the considerable loads and deformations involved. Designing the structure also required accommodating an existing basement on this “brownfield” site; a challenge in its own right. Together, we developed the design in detail and contributed to BREEAM consultancy by conducting a quick scan toward the ambitious “Excellent” certification goal.
Result
The outcome was a comprehensive feasibility study marked by thorough analysis and detailed development. Our work greatly expanded our expertise in multi-level distribution centres.
Although realisation in Maarssen ultimately proved to be a bridge too far at this time, the insights gained will strongly inform future projects, especially for “last mile” distribution centres in other urban locations.
