About the Project
Dexion, a renowned manufacturer and supplier of industrial warehouse equipment and shelving, develops innovative systems to optimise storage capacity in buildings. One of their key solutions is an automated storage system featuring a shuttle that moves along rails in aisles, automatically transporting pallets to their designated positions in the warehouse. Ensuring the permanent safe operation of this system is crucial. To guarantee this, Dexion engaged Vicoma with a specific question: Can you demonstrate that there is no fatigue in the steel?
Vicoma’s Role
To address this, We conducted a comprehensive fatigue study on the connecting rail between the warehouse racks, known as the C-rail. This component is subject to a very high number of load cycles and could potentially suffer from fatigue. Using parameters provided by Dexion, we carried out a fatigue analysis in accordance with the NEN-EN 13001-3-1 standard. We developed a detailed finite element model of the rails and determined their expected lifespan through FEA calculations.
Result
Our specialist calculations resulted in a thorough report that determines the permissible load cycles for the C-rail and its connections. This report provides Dexion with valuable insights into the effects of fastening methods on the rail’s durability and the timing for necessary replacements. Thanks to Vicoma’s scientifically substantiated findings, permanent safe operation is guaranteed, enabling Dexion to confidently ensure reliable, fatigue-free automated storage.
