About the Project
Danieli Corus asked Vicoma to explore the possibility of reducing the steel weight for a new gas cleaning facility. An earlier design, prepared for Aluminium Bahrain, required significantly more steel than a previous, comparable plant. With fabrication needing to start quickly, Vicoma assembled a team of five engineers to critically reassess the structure and optimise the design.
Vicoma’s Role
Our engineers conducted thorough strength and detailed calculations, rigorously reviewing the baghouse structure. They concluded that steel profiles could be reduced without compromising safety or performance. Beyond the initial scope, further savings were identified in other components including pipe bridges, a cooling tower, a platform, and a silo. These combined efforts led to a total steel reduction of 27% compared to the original calculations.
Result
The final steel requirement was reduced from 348.6 tons to just 255.2 tons; a remarkable 27% reduction. This outcome not only saved costs but also contributed to a more sustainable solution, all achieved through intensive collaboration within a very tight timeframe.
