AVR Duiven: Vicoma contributes to CO2 capture plant

About the Project

AVR is the first waste-to-energy company in the Netherlands to operate a large-scale CO₂ capture facility. They commissioned us to design a flue gas line for this new capture installation. To enable the capture of CO₂ from waste incineration, new branches had to be added to the existing chimney, allowing the flue gases to be diverted. These flue gases are routed through a new duct to the CO₂ capture facility, while the remaining gases are returned via a return line back to the chimney.

Vicoma’s Role

We were responsible for designing the branches connecting to the existing chimney and the new flue gas line. Additionally, we designed the steel support structure for both the branches and the flue gas duct. We carefully selected the positions of the expansion bellows to ensure the design was as lightweight as possible. The new connections to the existing chimney resulted in structural weakening; after thorough calculations, we provided recommendations on how to reinforce these areas.

The assignment was carried out by various Vicoma teams working from different locations; collaborative approach we call “One Vicoma,” which we regularly and gladly apply.

Result

AVR Duiven is now able to capture and recycle up to 60 kilotonnes of CO₂ per year; the first large-scale CO₂ capture facility in the Netherlands. Vicoma was proud to be part of this milestone!
